Abstract

Was sind die grossen Tendenzen der mittel- und westeuropäischen Ordnung seit dem Mittelalter? Welche Dynastien, welche Nationen haben das Schicksal des Kontinents bis in unsere Zeit bestimmt? Welche Vorstellungen von Europa herrschten in der Neuzeit vor? Inwiefern hat der I. Weltkrieg Europa radikal verändert? Was bleibt nach 1990 von der nach dem I. Weltkrieg vor allem unter der Leitung Clemenceaus geschaffenen Neuordnung des Kontinents? Stellt der nun auch von Deutschland getragene Prozess der Europäischen Integration einen Bruch mit dem französischen Republikanismus dar... oder ist er im Grund eine Bestätigung der kühnsten republikanischen und demokratischen Träume, die noch in der 1970er Jahren nicht einmal als Utopie vorstellbar waren?
